Walmart, McDonald’s or Starbucks have been familiar brands to consumers for a long time. These retailers become the most popular ones in the United States for a lot of reasons. However, the most-visited retailers are primarily in the fast-food, discount retail and pharmacy segments. Following are 5 most popular stores in America. Let’s check out now.

1. Walmart

Percent visited: 38.8%

Revenue: $469.2 billion

As the world’s biggest retailer, Wal-Mart Stores is apparently the most popular store in America. The supermarket chain, which was recently ranked No. 1 in the Fortune 500, is the country’s favorite place to shop with more than 4,570 locations in 2012. Wal-Mart also spent $1.8 billion on advertising and brought in nearly $329 billion in retail sales in the same year.

3. Subway

Percent visited: 37.8%

Among restaurants, Subway trails only McDonald's in popularity but it actually passed McDonald's in the number of stores globally in 2010. In 2012, the brand’s expansion continued with the number of stores growing 3.5%. In the same year, Subway spent nearly $545 million on advertising, up 6.1% from the year before. It would appear the amount of money they spent on advertising may finally be paying off.

4. Starbucks

Percent visited: 23.9%

Revenue: $13.3 billion

Starbucks is number one in the coffee category for two reasons. The first reason is that its sales in America grew by nearly 346% between 2001 and 2012 and the second one is that the number of stores increased by 195%. In recent years, the coffee chain has changed its product lineup. It also continues to attract coffee-drinking consumers with its free Wi-Fi as well as attract coffee drinkers of all age.

5. Walgreens

Walgreens, which was more popular among women than men, expanded faster than many others recently. In addition to selling widely purchased goods, this retailer has the most stores in America, with the number of Walgreens locations growing by 2.2% between 2011 and 2012.
