As usual, on 2 January 1939, Time Magazine published its Man of the Year issue whose title was bestowed to the person who had the greatest influence in the previous year's events. In 1938, Time had chosen Adolf Hitler as the man who was “for better or worse” was playing “his hymn of hate in a desecrated cathedral while victims dangle on a St. Catherine’s wheel while the Nazi hierarchy looks on.” Hitler had firmly grasped power in Germany, taken over Austria and Czechoslovakia, and had been given a free hand in Eastern Europe by the English prime minister of the time, Neville Chamberlain.
